PART ONE

Part 1 is a PC based multiple choice ADI theory and hazard perception test. It follows the same format as the current theory test for learners but you are required to answer 100 questions as opposed to 50 across a broader set of subjects. You will be required to score at least 57 on the hazard perception test as opposed to just 44.

PART TWO

Part 2 is an advanced driving test which lasts around an hour. It too has similarities to the current learner driving test, however the examiner will be looking for a very high standard of competence and you must show that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety and that you can apply them in practice, after all, you’re going to be teaching it to your learners.

After passing part one, part two and completing the necessary part 3 training you can start your job as a trainee driving instructor on what is called a Trainee Licence, also known as a Pink Licence. See below for more information on this route into the industry.

Trainee Instructors usually take around 10-20 hours of part 2 advanced driver training.

PART THREE

Part 3 is an instructional ability test, where the examiner watches you deliver a 45-minute driving lesson to a real learner. Depending on what they see will determine if you pass this third and final part of the qualification process.

What you’ll be assessed on: During your ADI part 3 test, your examiner will be looking for evidence that you meet the National standard for driver and rider training.

You’ll be marked on 17 high level areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories:

• Lesson planning
• Risk management
• Teaching and learning skills

The 17 high level areas of competence are listed in the ADI Part 3 Test Report Form which the examiner will assess during your test.

The Trainee Licence

Most new instructors begin their career on a trainee instructors licence before attempting the part 3 test. The trainee licence lasts for six months and allows you to teach real learners and get the valuable real-world experience to help you in preparation for the part 3 test. You will be paid the going rate when delivering these lessons, so essentially earning while you learn. There are conditions attached to the licence, one of which is you must have completed 40 hours of instructor training and complete the necessary declaration and complete a further 20 hours of instructor training whilst working on the trainee licence.
